In October, two TFC Programming Board members had the chance to attend SOCAP (the Social Capital Markets Conference) out in San Francisco, California as volunteers. Both Rabo Garba (MBA ’20) and Nasser Mallouky (MBA ’20) had the chance to connect with those in the impact investment community, learning from the failures and successes of those in the field. While there, Rabo and Nasser had the chance to attend panels under a variety of themes, including:
The Power of Story
In addition to hearing speakers around these themes, they also had the chance to hear from Impact Investing Funds such as SJF Ventures, Nonprofit Finance Fund, RSF Social Finance, USAID, Sorenson Impact, and Acumen. Overall, SOCAP hosted over 500 speakers in some 150 sessions.
When reflecting on his experience, Nasser was especially impressed by how openly everyone shared about their experiences while at the conference. “Having to chance to connect with investors and have conversations to learn what people have been able to do with capital using market forces was definitely a highlight for me. Everyone was so open to sharing about their experiences, and it really shed light on what the impact investing community is accomplishing.”
Overall, the conference gave students the chance to not only expand their network, but to expand their understanding of the impact investing world.
