TFC Seattle Trek – Peabody Student Perspective

Hannah Allen | TFC Trek Attendee, MPP ’18

This was the first trek that I’ve been involved with through the TFC and I was so excited for the opportunity to learn over winter break. I was drawn to this particular trip because I thought it would be a great chance to learn about Impact Investment and its relationship to social impact & entrepreneurship. As a Peabody student, this was a chance to step out of my comfort zone and learn about a lot of the financial implications and nuances of impact investing, as well as other topics that I otherwise would have had no real experience in or understanding of.

Going on the trek was an amazing opportunity to meet people from different programs and broaden your understanding of different professions and how their particular sector is approaching poverty alleviation. I was blown away at how much I learned in two days-both from my fellow participants and the companies and organizations themselves. I was introduced to a few organizations that I could actually see myself working in- utilizing skill sets developed from my time at Vanderbilt, and particularly through TFC.  We had the chance to go through an exercise on shared value with members of FSG, utilizing Wal-Mart as a case study.

To those who are interested in learning more about a particular sector or having the chance to meet with excited and passionate innovators, this trek would be incredibly rewarding for you. To see how social impact truly plays out in the investment sector and in the consulting sphere was truly a privilege
